Forget the specifications for a moment. These three things tell us far more about the gaming PC they actually need.
WHAT GAMES DO THEY PLAY?
This is the best place to start.
Games such as Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite and Rocket League don't necessarily need an expensive gaming PC to run brilliantly. More demanding games need considerably more graphics performance.
If you know the three or four games they play most — or the games they're hoping to play — you're already well on your way to choosing the right PC.
WHAT SCREEN WILL THEY USE?
We provide 1080p monitors in our bundles.
For most first gaming setups, 1080p is a great place to start and doesn't require the same level of hardware as higher-resolution gaming.
If they already have a gaming monitor, knowing its resolution can help us match the PC to it.

WHAT'S YOUR BUDGET?
There's a good gaming PC for a wide range of budgets.
The important thing is spending that budget in the right places. We'd rather recommend a well-balanced PC that suits the games they actually play than sell you expensive components they'll never make use of.
Know the games, the screen and the budget? That's most of the hard work done.
GAMING PC SPECS — IN PLAIN ENGLISH
You don't need to understand every component inside a gaming PC. But there are four terms you'll see regularly while shopping.
GRAPHICS CARD / GPU
The part that matters most for gaming.
The graphics card creates the images you see in a game and has a major influence on how smoothly games run and the graphics settings you can use.
As a general rule, more demanding games and higher-resolution monitors need a more powerful graphics card.
PROCESSOR / CPU
Keeps everything running behind the scenes.
The processor handles game logic, calculations and the many other jobs the PC is performing.
A good gaming PC needs a capable processor, but the most expensive processor doesn't automatically make the best gaming PC. What matters is having the right balance between the CPU and graphics card.
MEMORY / RAM
The PC's short-term working memory.
RAM gives Windows, games and other programs room to work while they're running.
For most gaming PCs, 16GB is a sensible starting point. Higher-end systems and heavier workloads can benefit from 32GB.
SSD / STORAGE
Where the games actually live.
The SSD stores Windows, games, applications and files.
Modern games can be surprisingly large, so storage can disappear quickly. 512GB can be enough for a smaller game library, while 1TB gives considerably more breathing room.

Ideal for younger gamers, first-time PC players and popular games that don't require huge amounts of graphics performance.
A great place to start for games such as Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite and Rocket League, as well as homework and everyday use.
Best suited to 1080p gaming.
ENTHUSIAST
More performance for gamers who play a bit of everything.
A step up for players who want stronger performance, higher settings and access to a broader range of modern games.
A great choice when their gaming tastes are expanding and you want more performance without jumping straight into a high-end PC.
PRO GAMER
For more demanding games and serious gamers.
Designed for gamers who want higher graphics settings, stronger frame rates and the performance required by more demanding modern games.
This is where we'd start looking for someone playing the latest big-budget titles or moving towards higher-resolution gaming.
GAMESMASTER
For the gamer who wants considerably more.
Our higher-end systems are for demanding games, high-refresh monitors, higher resolutions, streaming, content creation and gamers who simply want more performance headroom.
If they're already a serious PC gamer and know exactly what they want, this is probably where they'll be looking.
THE RIGHT PC — NOT THE MOST EXPENSIVE ONE
It's easy to assume that spending more automatically means buying a better gaming PC.
It doesn't.
If the games they love will run brilliantly on a £700 system, we'd rather recommend that than convince you to spend £1,000 on performance they'll never notice.
Equally, if spending a little more now would make a meaningful difference to the games they want to play, we'll tell you that too.
Our aim isn't to sell you the most expensive PC. It's to help you buy the right one.
